A creative nonfiction essay about vulnerability, escape, and the profound kindness of some strangers.

When faced with a near death experience after her last visit with her father, Lizzy takes the reader back through experiences she faced that ultimately led to her decision to protect her peace. In this person essay, Lizzy explores themes surrounding childhood, abuse, parental power, love and suffering, and family beyond blood.

This poem is meant to shed light on how chronic disease causes an unimaginable suffering that those who may be otherwise healthy would never understand. Lizzy suffers from an autoimmune disease and a chronic degenerative joint disorder which she openly sheds light on so others might find comfort in feeling less alone.
